IT job aspirants are reading the wrong side of the tech jobs layoffs: A HR Professional

Debashish Ghosh, Senior Vice President and Head HR, Berkadia Group, one of the two panellists at a Fire Chat at HR Conclave organised on Saturday by VJIT (Vidya Jyothi Institute of Technology) college located at Chilkur Road in the city outskirts said the Information Technology job aspirants are currently reading the wrong side of the news of how many employees in IT are being laid off. And that number is a small fraction of those retained.   The Good news is that the balance, the large portion of employees are not laid off.  Unfortunately, that news is not highlighted. While some are laid off, there are many retained.  That is the positive part of it. They are retained because of their skills. So, the good adage ‘where there is a will, there is a way’ is now modified as ‘where there is a skill, there is a way’, he told the 300-plus packed audience of Engineering and Management students in the hall.

We can not also deny the fact that quite a lot of companies are also going on a hiring spree to keep up with the ever-evolving demands of new technologies, he added. It is important to understand the market trends and determine which IT roles can promise job security amid the ongoing layoffs.  The aspirants need to understand as the economic climate changes, some jobs are created and others become redundant. So how can you protect yourself from being laid off?  The answer is simple---upskill yourself.  That is why ‘where there is a ‘skill’ there is a way, added Debashish Ghosh.

Disclosing this in a press note issued in the city on Monday Dr Praveen Kumar Manager of Training & placement said the half-day HR Conclave, the first of its kind by the college focused on Future-Forward Engineering.  Titled Beacon 2024, the HR Conclave was organized in partnership with WOW HR. WoW HR is a not-for-profit organisation intended to create a WoW factor among HR Fraternities and the Student community through Skill development.

Dr. E. Sai Baba Reddy, Principal of VJIT says the industry-academia interface is the way forward and this conclave is the right step in that direction. I hope students and faculty will benefit immensely.  In collaboration between academia and the industry is the need of the hour. Because there is no point in producing industry-irrelevant graduates. In such a scenario student who graduate remain unemployable because they will lack the important skills that are required by industry and the workplace.

Krithivasan S, an HR influencer, career analyst, and HR advisor said, Wow HR was a one-year-old trust founded by HR professionals for HR professionals. We focus on the segment of Skill Development which supports individuals to enhance their professional development and develop future leaders.

The inaugural function was followed by a fireside chat on the Future of work in engineering.  It was moderated by M Venkata Chalapathy, Sr Director & Head HR Virtusa.

Setting the tone for the chat, he said recessions are part of the industry’s journey. Recession, as you know is a period of temporary economic decline when trade and industrial activity are reduced. It is a trend that happens every two years. Fittest survive in such a scenario and you should be recession-proof. You do not worry much about it. The best way to navigate such a scenario is to prepare and get the right exposure, he added

Dr. Reena Das, CHRO, Keolls, Hyderabad Metro spoke about T-shape skills, in which she described the vertical line representing expertise, discipline and knowledge of a chosen field, and the horizontal line representing cross-discipline competencies and the ability to collaborate with professionals.

She highlighted the importance of self-aware strengths, clarity of thought and communication with impact are a few things which are very crucial for a successful career in the IT industry.

Intervening, the moderator said, it is important to fail and it is also important to learn quickly from failures and bounce back. So better have an appetite for failure.

Adding more Ghosh said, it is you, who is responsible for getting a job. So, it is better to be job-ready. At the same time, the talented must also be good in their communication skills. This one skill sets you apart in the crowd.

Two panel discussions were held.  One panel focused on Guiding GenZ - Power of Coaching, and the other one was Empowering Students: Navigating Disruptive Technology.
